Making geology a sexy subject is serious business! Zentner has devoted three decades to reaching an ever-increasing audience of all ages, who want to connect to the geology upon which they live. Delving into his evolving teaching style in the Internet era, for a subject matter that has become the purview of specialists, he details his role as a educator who paints big pictures.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER BIO

Nick has been with CWU Geology since 1992. He teaches a popular "GEOL 101 - Geology of Washington" course to CWU students every Fall Quarter and Winter Quarter - and his course is open to townspeople efor free! He also teaches "GEOL 351 - Pacific Northwest Geology" every Spring.

Nick's outreach to the public includes a popular Ellensburg evening lecture series "Downtown Geology Lecture", a PBS TV series "Nick On The Rocks", and he leads the Ellensburg Chapter of the Ice Age Flood Institute.

In 2015, Nick received the prestigious James Shea Award, a national award recognizing exceptional delivery of Earth Science content to the general public. Past Shea Award recipients include John Mcphee, Jack, Horner, Robert Ballard, and Stephen Jay Gould.

Dr. Ross is nationally known as a leader in higher education, especially in the field of cross-cultural communication. In 1982, she became the founding president of Heritage University, where she oversaw its growth from 85 students to more than 1400. Today, she is working to share the success of the Heritage model with colleges and universities throughout the United States. In 2018, Harvard University Press published her book based on work with first-generation-to-college student research assistants, identifying often-overlooked needs of these students. Breakthrough Strategies: Classroom-Based Practices to Support New Majority College Students received wide visibility and speaking requests from universities nationally.

Dr. Ross has received numerous awards, including the 1989 national Harold McGraw Prize in education, the 1995 Washington State Medal of Merit, and in 1997 she was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow, the so-called "Genius Award." She has received honorary degrees from more that a dozen colleges and universities. Dr. Ross holds a B.A. degree from Fort Wright College (predecessor to Heritage University), an M.A. from Georgetown University and a Ph.D. from the Claremont Graduate University. At Claremont, she did her dissertation on cultural factors affecting the success of American Indian students in higher education. She has been a member of the Catholic order of Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary since 1982.

Make the change and feel good doing it! A plant-based diet could be the answer to so many problems. Do it for your health, do it for the animals, and do it for the planet!

Dr. Yami is a board-certified pediatrician and mother to two active and healthy boys. She is a passionate promoter of healthy lifestyles, especially the power of plant-based diets for the prevention of chronic disease. To assist parents and other health care providers, she founded VeggieFitKids.com where she provides information on plant-based diets for children including recipes, videos and tips on nutrition and lifestyle. She is also the host of the podcast Veggie Doctor Radio.

She obtained a certificate in plant-based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Foundation in 2013. In addition, she is a certified Food for Life Instructor through the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and a Wellcoaches certified health and wellness coach. She has been teaching live cooking and nutrition classes since 2014. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Yami owns Nourish Wellness, a pediatric practice and wellness center in Yakima, Washington.

B.S. with distinction, Civil Engineering, Stanford University, 1968:Ph.D., Geophysics, subspecialty geophysical fluid dynamics, 1974: Researcher at the Polar Science Center, Applied Physics Laboratory, Univ. of Washington 1974-78: Geophysicist, US Army Cold Regions Laboratory, Hanover NH, 1978-1981: Occupied the Arctic Chair at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA 1982-83: Formed independent McPhee Research Company in 1984 that has continued to the present: Lead and participated in two dozen scientific projects in both the Arctic and Antarctic: Authored or coauthored 60 refereed scientific articles, including chapters in 5 books, and two encyclopedia entries: Authored a monograph entitled Air-Ice-Ocean Interaction, published by Springer, 2008: Served a term on the Polar Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences
