Roots to Wings

Mirna explains the challenges of bringing conflicting neighboring communities together. Inspiring, reaching out and supporting those economically and opportunity challenged youth to pursue a careers as physicians through the Roots to Wings Program. She contributes the program's success to the principles of egalitarianism, and collaboration she insist that people must be willing to "come from a place of not knowing" and be "open to learn."

TEDx SPEAKER: Dr. Mirna Ramon-Diaz

Mirna I. Ramos-Diaz, MD, FAAP, is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Department of Family Medicine at Pacific Northwest University of Osteopathic Medicine. She is a Course Director for the 2nd-year Clinical Skills course in the Osteopathic Medicine program. Additionally, she leads several important initiatives including the Roots to Wings Mentoring program, which is a project whose purpose is to create an educational/mentoring pathway enabling Native American and Hispanic Youth from the Yakima Valley to become health professionals. Dr. Ramos-Diaz received her MD from University of Miami School of Medicine, completed her pediatric residency at University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital and is Board Certified in Pediatrics. Additionally, she received a Master’s degree in religious studies from Gonzaga University in 2009. Dr. Ramos-Diaz has lived in the valley for over 14 years and worked as a pediatrician serving primarily Hispanics and Native Americans in our communities for over eleven years. She enjoys: spending time with her family (which includes her spouse, three Godchildren, seven canines, and other four-legged and two-legged companions); working on her family’s farm; training dogs for competition and pet therapy; photography; journaling; and hiking.
