TEDxYakima Salon Season 3 Event 11

Ed Marquand brings design and community service to rural spaces yet discovered by the metropolitan design world. In the cavernous setting of a former apple warehouse, Ed has brought to life the creativity of a community yearning to find its place on the map in Central Washington.

TEDx SPEAKER: Ed Marquand

Ed Marquand grew up in Southern California. After graduating with a studio art degree from Eastern Oregon State College in 1974, he returned to Los Angeles where he worked in graphic design studios, studied photography of artwork at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and taught professional practice classes and workshops at UCLA Extension and colleges around the state. He has been a creative director and graphic designer for over three decades. He started his design practice and Marquand Books in 1978 when he moved to Seattle from Los Angeles. His publishing studio specializes in monographs, exhibition catalogues, and collection books. Marquand’s career has consistently worked to connect the art world with the broader public, through design, text, typography, and strong imagery in unusual and fresh ways.

In 2006, Marquand expanded his design studio to Tieton, Washington, to develop projects incorporating art, design, graphic design, craft, and local enterprise. Mighty Tieton is now a decade old. Under its banner are several small studios.

Today, Paper Hammer Studios is well established with a full time bindery, letterpress and screen printing studio, and laser cutting shop. Marquand and his local staff of four produce books and limited edition objects of exceptional quality. They take full advantage of printing and binding technologies of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.

Tieton Mosaic was founded in 2013 to make and install typographic mosaics. Originally inspired by the New York subway mosaic signage work done a century ago by Heins & LaFarge and Squire Vickers, the work created by Tieton Mosaic extends those traditions. As the only mosaic studio in the country with this focus, Tieton Mosaic is becoming recognized as an unusual resource for mosaic fabrication.
